The anime adaptation has aired since October 1999, produced by Toei Animation.
Its defining structural trait is the arc. The crew reaches a new island, meets its order and its problem, the conflict breaks, and they sail on. The total length is enormous, but each arc reads as a complete story โ which is why a reader can join partway and still follow that island's plot. It is frequently studied as a way of keeping a very long serial dense rather than saggy.
Several devices keep a long work from losing force. The geography and history of its world were designed early, so events hundreds of chapters later connect back to minor earlier scenes. Each crew member's past is resolved as its own self-contained story, which gives the characters weight. And conflicts focus on what a character is trying to protect rather than who wins, so repeated battles do not exhaust the emotion.
